Wildlife Behaviour + Fire Stewardship

Gathering Voices Society is coordinating a study to understand the effect of Indigenous fire stewardship on deer, moose, and bear habitat and behaviour.

Project Overview

Drs Jonaki Bhattacharyya and Paul Boyce are working with Gathering Voices Society to evaluate the effects of Indigenous fire stewardship on ungulate and grizzly bear habitat behaviour. Dr. Bhattacharyya joined us in April 2023 to participate in our spring burns, and to monitor post-burn ungulate behaviour through wildlife cameras. The wildlife camera grids will be expanded in 2024, part of our efforts to develop a scientific framework with which to assess the holistic effects of cultural burning.
